Introducing the IET (UK)

In a drive to inspire the young engineering students of the King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM, Saudi Arabia) to join the IET and become a part of the Global Knowledge Network, the IET’s KFUPM student chapter had organized a series of talks introducing IET and the local network. The audience comprised of undergraduate students hailing from various engineering disciplines like Computer Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical & Petroleum Engineering, Architectural & Environmental Engineering, Systems Engineering, etc.

The talks were strategically organized to tackle three important aspects students who are un-aware of the IET typically would wish to inquire of. Firstly, to begin with, before joining IET, it is obvious that a student would inquire of the benefits he would be entitled to by joining in. So, Sulaiman AbdulAzeez (Former President, IET KFUPM) presented before the audience how the IET benefits its young student members.

“You get to develop your management skills, communications skills, etc. which alone will actually help you ace a job” says Sulaiman. He points out that although getting a good GPA is important, “…it only helps you get into the interview, but what happens after that will be decided by your skills…” he adds enthusiastically. The numerous benefits and advantages of the student memberships like: access to Career Manager, invaluable Knowledge Resources, Professional Networking opportunities, E&T magazines subscriptions, etc. were also presented.

Secondly, to inform the audience of what kinds of events and activities the local network and the student branch organize, Mohammed Maalej (Vice President, IET KFUPM) presented some of the most notable and popular events organized so far which include technical seminars, soft skills workshops, competitions, etc. He also discussed with the audience about the student chapter’s ideas for future events and invited suggestions from the audience, thereby creating more of an interactive and friendly atmosphere rather than making it a seemingly-boring lecture format.

Thirdly, to present the diverse nature of talents and skills that our members gain and develop being actively participating in IET, Abdul Jabbar Siddiqui (President, IET KFUPM) presented before the audience the various ways in which they can join in and exercise their muscles of creativity and talents.

“You can join us as Event Managers, Public Relations Coordinators, Collaboration Coordinators, Industry Relations Coordinators, Media Coordinators, Web Developers, etc…anything you enjoy doing, or something you wish to acquire the skills of…” says Siddiqui. “Help Yourself, and decide your own designation! We all are here to help realize the motto of ‘Collective Inspiration’ proudly echoed by the IET” he adds brightly. The audience was also given a brief demo of the three-step simple procedure setup on the student chapter’s website to ease the process of registering on IET-UK and IET-KFUPM databases. The event was hosted by Omair Siddiqui (Secretary, IET KFUPM) who gave the vote of thanks to all the organizers and the attendees who made the event enjoyable and fruitful. The event was successfully organized amidst a hectic schedule and a short span of organizing time owing sincerely to the dedicated team of committee members who sacrificed their time and efforts to make the event happen successfully:
